“State Safe Routes to School Program” and bicycle rodeo for Yucca Valley students

The Palm Springs Guru loves the people and the community spirit demonstrated, every day, throughout Palm Springs and the greater Palm Springs area.

Today the Palm Springs Guru salutes Yucca Valley.

The town of Yucca Valley and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department hosted a “State Safe Routes to School Program” and bicycle rodeo for Yucca Valley students on Saturday, November 8, at the Yucca Valley Community Center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The program is designed for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Parents and guardians of children who walk or ride a bicycle or a scooter to school were encouraged to participate in the program.

Children who ride bicycles to school received free helmets, bicycle locks and water bottles.

Children that walk to school received a free backpack and water bottle.

Local sheriff’s officers and Yucca Valley town personnel facilitated the event.

The bicycle rodeo took place between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Children were given an opportunity to ride through the obstacle course and learn the rules of the road for bicycle safety.

Bicycles were safety checked by Jima Reed, owner of the Joshua Tree Bicycle Shop; telephone (760) 366-3377.

Bicycles were available, to ride, for children who do not bring their own bicycle.

Mr. Reed personally fitted the free helmets for each child.

Six lucky participants won new bicycles in a drawing at the end of the event.

The Palm Springs Guru congratulates the town of Yucca Valley and everyone who participated in this wonderful bicycle safety program

I encourage all our Palm Springs and greater Palm Springs communities to provide similar programs.
